This paper examines the emergence of Big Data repositories and the particular problems that are encountered when these data sources need to be transmitted over limited military networks.

Following a review of the historical development of Big Data the paper details the technology challenges involved in the management and analysis of large repositories and is illustrated by some existing and emerging military examples including applications in Intelligence, Command and Control, operations, logistics and field maintenance. In an attempt to offer options for dealing with Big Data an evaluation of some of the techniques that can be applied to data to overcome the network constraints that exist are examined.
