Case study on iOra contributes to UK export growth

iOra Software Ltd has reported a 400 per cent rise in profits during the past financial year with 90 per cent of its new business income generated by exports to Australia, the United States, Mainland Europe (France and Germany) as well as new territories in Asia-Pacific (Thailand, Indonesia and Japan). The UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) has cited iOra as a UK export success story with export contracts over recent years valued at over USD20million.

iOra’s patented technology enables organisations with users operating in remote or mobile locations to have access to up-to-date business critical information; iOra dramatically reduces the size of data being sent over wireless and radio networks.  Its technology has been successfully deployed on tens of thousands of machines by customers including the UK MoD, US Marine Corps, Shell and NATO.

High profile contracts secured during 2013 include the US Navy (which was won against a raft of US competitors), the Australian Department of Defence and NATO. Announcements of other major wins are due imminently including a global peace-keeping organisation.

Philip Wye, iOra’s COO says,

“iOra is punching above its weight as a small UK company, particularly in the global defence market. Our success can be attributed to a high investment in the design of our patented technology, the development of our UK technicians, and a business team that understands how to deploy on an international scale.”

He adds,

“There are considerable opportunities for iOra in the parts of the world where broadband connections are sporadic or non-existent – people just expect to be connected and have access to key data. They don’t always understand the logistics in making that happen; even parts of Western Europe and the United States, for example, suffer from interrupted supply.”

iOra’s customers operate in locations where there are few or no high speed networks. Here connectivity is delivered by wireless, either over satellite or land-based radio.  Having developed a stack of patented compression and replication technologies, iOra can now compress data by up to 90% and thus make communications over these wireless connections a fast and affordable reality.  It enables all users, irrespective of location, to have the same experience when accessing enterprise content – thus ensuring information consistency, guaranteeing regulatory compliance and enabling organisation-wide collaboration.

“iOra’s success is down to hard work, excellent technology and good people.” Wye adds, “Additionally our global partners ensure deliverability of our solutions worldwide. There are three top tips I would emphasise to other companies looking to grow their export markets:

  • Understand the country you are exporting to. Be confidence that there is a demand for the goods and services you want ot sell. From our perspective, iOra Software is ideal for geographical regions that have scant network coverage but have a demand for shared information.
  • Identify the best way to sell into a new foreign market. This may be through a partner, an agent or JV. iOra wors with knowledgeable and specialist partners globally who understand the technology and are able to implement iOra’s solution alongsde thei own offerings.
  • Match up to global competition. iOra’s export success has been achieved because we’ve been able to develop a technology that meets the needs of our customer base today whilst ensuring development for future requirements.

We are looking to increase our exports in 2014 with a 500% growth in the business and have a buoyant prospect list to help us achieve our goals.”
